Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
