PSG Overcomes Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening trophy on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger found the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice late to seize a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
