The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to lessen the amount of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it now features over 1 billion AI-generated clips.
Testing and Rollout
The update is being tested over the following weeks before a global rollout. This advancement aligns with a rise in AI content, fueled by emerging AI video creators.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the quickest rising video streams on another major platform primarily display content made by AI. A considerable share of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is often absurd or surreal.
Our research shows that many people like content created using AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” stated a platform representative.
Scale of AI Content
TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, over 100 m videos are uploaded to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small part of its complete catalog.
Customizing Your Feed
Users will be able to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the content preference option in the app and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting cover current affairs, fashion, beauty, and movement.
Platform Guidelines
TikTok’s rules oblige creators to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the app will now add an artificially created watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This measure is designed to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is additionally establishing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for experts and organizations to create informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to educating computer science.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, amid controversy over proposals to lay off numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. It is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A company official explained that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content before it has to be seen by staff. The company reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
